Dry Branch Fire
Squad |
http://www.drybranchfiresquad.com |
Inspired by a fierce and uncompromising loyalty to
the most traditional aspects of bluegrass and old-time mountain music,
Ohio-based Dry Branch Fire Squad draws its audience into the ancient emotional
resonances in which bluegrass is rooted, and provides a strong taste of the
culture in which it evolved. The quintet's approach is a timeless mix of
straightforward stories packed with emotion, sung from the heart to the
uncluttered accompaniment of mandolin, guitar, banjo, and bass. Between songs,
the audience falls silent in anticipation of mandolinist Ron Thomason's knowing,
unsentimental evocation of mountain culture, and is repeatedly rendered helpless
with laughter by his brilliantly wry, all-too-true commentaries on life beyond
Appalachia. Ron is joined by Dan Russell, Brian Aldridge, and and Tom Boyd.

Inspired by their rich heritage of
Celtic music and fired by the strength of today's Scottish
cultural scene, the veteran Celtic fusionists Battlefield Band
mix traditional songs and tunes with new slef-penned material,
playing them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern
instruments-bagpipes, fiddles, synthesizers, guitars, and flutes
and accordion. This quartet, Alan Reid, Alasdair White, Mike
Katz, and Sean O'Donnell plays music of Scotland and Ireland,
playing reels and hornpipes to ballads and jigs.
Inspired by their rich heritage
of Celtic music and fired by the strength and vibrancy of
today's Scottish cultural scene, which indeed they have done
much to create and fuel, they have led, and been at the
forefront, of a great revival in Scottish music. Refusing to be
limited musically by suffocating antiquarianism, or the music
business' fashions, they have mixed the old songs and music with
a new self-penned repertoire, all played on a fusion of ancient
and modern instruments - bagpipes, fiddle, synthesiser, guitar,
flutes, bodhran and accordion. Named after the Glasgow suburb of
Battlefield, where the group was formed by four student friends,
Battlefield Band have been on the world''s roads for just on 30
years now, distilling their own unique form of the Scottish
spirit

Mark Stuart & the
Bastard Sons
Dave Gleason & the Golden Cadillacs |

|
Longtime San Diego country band Bastard Sons of
Johnny Cash not only moved to Austin, Texas, but they've dropped the Johnny Cash
reference from the band name, replacing it with that of their lead singer and
chief songwriter. Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons is a hard-charging
country-rock band in the lineage of San Diego's roots rock community, musically
descended from the Beat Farmers and Mojo Nixon.
Their latest, the fourth from the Bastard Sons,
Bend in the Road, finds the band firmly in a country vein, but with a definite
rock underpinning. And while the album opens with a cover of a Billy Joe Shaver
song, the best song is Stuart's own "Power of a Woman" ---- a high-energy
electric country-rocker. Or maybe it's the lovely acoustic "Lonestar, Lovestruck,
Blues" (with Dennis Caplinger's gorgeous mandolin fills giving it a real nice
old-timey feel). Or maybe it's the barrelhouse country boogie of "Seven Miles to
Memphis."
Point is, Stuart can write, and the 11 tracks he
wrote for this release are not only solid, but catchy, the kind you'll have a
hard time getting out of your head. The band is tight, he's got a nice singing
voice ---- they sure seem to be a lucky break or two from hitting it big.
"Bastard Sons ..."
captures the lonesomeness of Cash, the stripped-down melodies of Nebraska-era
Bruce Springsteen, the rowdiness of Steve Earle and morphs them into a
captivating collection that blends twang and sophistication."-Billboard
Magagzinge----- Country Standard Time -- "Walks a deliberately fine
line between rootsy contemporary Americana and twangy traditional country."
Honky tonker Dave Gleason plays first. "Tough,Telecaster
Driven Honky Tonk Music'. "California Country-Rock With A Big Dose Of
Bakersfield Twang". "Keeper Of The Flame Of California Country Music-From All
Things Gram Parsons Soul To Buck Owens Bakersfield Sound". These Are Just A
Few Things That Have Been Said About Dave Gleason's Brand Of Country Music. A
Former Bay Area Resident (Now Living In The Los Angeles Area) with 4 Acclaimed
CD's To His Credit, Gleason Has Shared The Stage With Everyone From Albert
Lee/Bill Kirchen/Dave Alvin to Jim Lauderdale/Billy Joe Shaver and The Derailers.
Since his 2007 relocation from San Francisco
to Southern California, Gleason has assumed Most Valuable Player status on the
Los Angeles country music scene. Dave has proven himself in every category, as a
strong singer, a solid, tradition-savvy songwriter, and a guitarist of nearly
unsurpassable gifts. --Chris Morris, host, "Watusi Rodeo," Indie 103.1/Los

David Wilcox
|
http://davidwilcox.com |
For over twenty years, singer
songwriter David Wilcox has been making music that bravely
navigates a path through the emotional static of modern life
towards a better place. With last year’s release of his
sixteenth release, Open Hand, Wilcox once again hits home with
thoughtful, philosophical, yet straightforward songs, sung in
his very appealing voice, and self accompanied as one of the
best acoustic guitarists in the folk music world. With a style
that The Boston Globe says "Combines the best of both pop and
modern folk aesthetics," he writes songs that are wake up
calls to the heart, balm for the soul. Through yearning melodies
and direct lyrics, they dare us to remember the promises we made
to ourselves of who we want to be. They offer us a guiding hand,
along with the hope and courage to go forward ..

Skynnyn Lynnyrd |
http://www.reloadedrocks.com |
Skynnyn Lynnyrd is more than just a tribute band to
Lynyrd Skynyrd. Skynnyn Lynnyrd has stripped the sound of the legendary band
down to its finest detail and re-assembled it, not as a cover, but as it was
intended. Skynnyn Lynnyrd began to take form at the very moment of the tragic
crash that ended the lives of Ronnie VanZant, Steve and Cassie Gains as well as
Dean Kilpatrick. An American saga ended on that day in 1977, leaving a void that
begs to be filled by millions of fans all over the world. It's about the
music... real, honest and often edgy. Every nuance and detail is pursued with
passion and determination...to be performed as if by the original band. Skynnyn
Lynnyrd is the "Reloaded" Lynyrd Skynyrd. The parity is remarkable...so
much so that one may be inclined to believe there is some divine intervention
going on here; as if guided by the spirit of the original band members who
departed so long ago. While there will never be another Lynyrd Skynyrd, Skynnyn
Lynnyrd is Lynyrd Skynyrd - - - RELOADED. Check it out y'all.
